What does it all mean?
If you read this post then you know about my project and that I’m looking for people to participate. You know from this post that if you’re interested you should send me some good quality photos following a few guidelines and that I made a cheat sheet to help you out. But here comes the tricky part. I’m looking for one more thing. You can take good looking photos and send them to me, but what does it all mean?
Dealing with our infinite nature
Don’t worry, I’m not about to get existential on you. All I’m looking for is some original thought, something interesting. What kind of original thought am I looking for? I’m looking for a glimpse into some kind of story or idea told through the people, the props and their arrangement, the colors, whatever. I’m hoping for a story/idea/ thought/whatever conveyed through an image, or the combination of an image and a title. We don’t need the whole story, just a glimpse, and the viewer gets to make up the rest. There can be one person or more than one person; use your friend, your grandparents, your children. It can be as simple as you, me, and a bucket of chicken. It doesn’t really matter as long as, like I mentioned earlier in this post, it’s Prime. And in true creative fashion, hopefully not something obvious or cliché. Maybe this sounds like a lot. When talking about this project with other people, the advice was to keep things simple, that people wouldn’t participate if I asked too much from participants. That’s probably true, but like the dating game, selectivity and standards ain’t such a bad thing. And I have a feeling there are people floating around the internest out there who won’t mind putting a little thought into doing something cool and interesting. It may take some time to find them, but I only need 10 more than 90, and I can wait. Like the road to self-discovery or waiting for water to boil, some things are worth it.
We’re not in infinity; we’re in the suburbs
To explain things better, I brought my own image to Show & Tell. Two people. A man, a woman, a mask and a title: Marriage. These four things tell a story, or at least provide the groundwork for a story. Any ideas as to where it goes? Take it a step further and we can ask if there’s something more – hopefully some things that make you go hmmm… The woman’s holding the mask, but it’s obscuring the man. He’s in the shadows, she’s in the light. Is this intentional or just the way the light fell on the models? Is there something in their expressions, something to the title? Perhaps. I know what I’m hoping it conveys, and maybe someday I’ll explain it on VH1 Storytellers. But right now, I’m more interested in what you think it means. Leave a comment and let me know.
No manure… no magic
Next time, we’ll continue Show & Tell and I’ll bring another example. We can go a little deeper trying to come up with the meaning of it all. Whether it’s crawling deeper down the rabbit hole or sinking deeper in the pasture, I’ll let you decide.
Until then, I’d love to hear what you think about the picture above, what it means, if it means nothing at all, or any other opinions. Feel free to share below.
